Windows 2003 is dead - Are you ready: Securing an un-supported OS

As Windows 2003 comes to end in July this year, we have noticed a rush to either migrate asap or to mitigate the effects.

As Windows 2003 comes to end in July this year, we have noticed a rush to either migrate asap or to mitigate the effects. From a security angle, organisations who can’t move from Win 2003 due to legacy application or simply not having the time are faced with a conundrum: the Anti-virus vendors typically won’t support a legacy OS, and Microsoft will cease to issue Security patches. A perfect storm of Zero defence against any new threats, along with inability to protect against existing malware.

What happens when support for Windows Server 2003 ends?

Termination of non-security related support – patches, updates and non- security fixes will no longer be available

Elimination of security fixes - regardless of how severe an issue may be, security fixes will no longer be delivered

NO SUPPORT - even if you experience an outage and are unable to restore your critical systems technical support will not be available
COMPLIANCE - if you are handling payment card industry data you may find that you are out of compliance, leading to fines and being cut off from trading partners

What are the options?

1.

DO NOTHING - Systems will still run, partner and user communities will try to help, but systems will be open to a significant security threats.

2.

HARDWARE REPLACEMENT - Upgrade the out of maintenance physical servers and upgrade to a Supported OS, ensure legacy Apps are not affected.

3.

MICROSOFT CUSTOM SUPPORT - For-A-fee custom support can be costly and time-consuming.

4. VIRTUALIZATION/CLOUD - Cost & complexity to achieve optimum benefits

5. PROTECTION - Use a 3rd party product to secure servers and data regardless of the Vendor support, which removes the time-critical need to upgrade.

If you want to have more time to migrate without the security impact, then maybe point 5 above is worth investigation further, we have technologies that despite the OS support can protect your Win2003 systems beyond the July deadline, please email or call us for more information on webinar details.
